My name is Nancy Herrmann and I work at the intersection of design, beauty and technology.
As an accomplished Creative Director and Branding Consultant, I team up with marketing directors from notable beauty, fashion and luxury companies to reinvent their brand stories and design irresistible products. I do this by leaning on more than 20 years of experience, translating ideas into images and data into design.
Like an urban sherpa, I explore new territories; collect inspiration from the worlds of fashion, sport, music, art and technology; and create pathways for navigating the market. The result is that fresh ideas, insights and solutions are never far away. I firmly believe that standing at the edge is where we'll find the most exquisite view. It's from there that we realize our fullest potential.
In many respects, I had an idyllic childhood, full of play, creativity and boundless adventure. But, it comes as no surprise that growing up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. during the Nixon era, I became an earlier adopter of Generation X disillusionment. The cracks in the system were evident all around me. Ever the explorer, I pried them open and set out to find my place in the world.
Diving into the deep end of fashion, beauty, music, art and culture during high school was my first lesson in challenging conventions. Subsequently, my college years at Virginia Tech were spent in the Fashion and Architecture buildings. I can boast that I didn’t attend a single football game of the Peach Bowl–winning Hokies. I did, however, earn a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design and promptly headed to New York City for my big debut.
With a little pluck and earnestness, I landed a coveted job at Michael Kors. There, I had the opportunity to delve into the rarified world of luxury fashion and learn from the best. Diligently packing samples and answering phones eventually led to a role as Director of PR and Advertising.
After several years in the demanding fashion industry, I took on the formidable challenge of pursuing a Masters of Architecture degree from Parsons School of Design. And, for good measure, I picked up an MFA from the inaugural Digital Design & Technology program along the way.
In more recent years, I was Senior Art Director at L’Oréal Paris where I received two design patents and considerable expertise in concept development, brand marketing, package design, production and retail merchandising. My ongoing search for beauty has naturally led to work for additional category leaders like Vichy USA, Redken, Maybelline/Garnier and L’Oréal Professionnel.
So far, I have reinvented my career no less than four times (you can see a few highlights in the sidebar). Notably, its always had a strong thread of design woven through it. As you can imagine, I’ve become quite adept at navigating uncertainty and visualizing connections.
When I’m not designing the next new product, I spend as much time as possible pushing my boundaries on a snowboard or a sailboat. I have a child-like glee for snow, ice cream and dogs and my #1 guilty pleasure is vampire shows. In fact, my favorite possession – a Burton red “Lipstick” snowboard with vampire fangs – combines three of my passions in one fell swoop.
If you’d like learn more about my storied past or be part of my glorious future, by all means, fill out this short form and I will get in touch right away.
