So it is that Kevin Cooley's captivating and mysterious snowscapes readily come to mind. This Brooklyn-based photographer explores the tenuous relationship between man and his environment and does a particularly beautiful job with his wintery destinations. He often employs the use of light to stand in for his human subjects, appearing as either a signal of settlement or a rescue beacon.
His most recent works, on view at the Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles were created while Cooley was a 2011 participant with The Arctic Circle, an expeditionary residency program taking place in Svalbard, the northernmost part of Norway.
