In my dreams, Smokin’ Bowls is tucked away at the edge of a snowy mountain run, where I can stop for a hot bowl of VT Maple Butternut Squash soup or Tuscan Lamb and White Bean stew. The owners, Ryan and Sarah James, create their delicious “fast food” with local, fresh, and organic ingredients like grass-fed beef, Vermont cheddar and maple syrup. In real life, this soup shack exists off-piste, down the road from Okemo, Stratton and nearby resorts.
This serves to remind me that I’m always on the hunt for a unique gastronomic experience on the slopes. It’s a shame that most resorts, even internationally renown ones, haven’t hit upon a food/concept formula to replace their bland hamburgers and cafeteria-style service.
Alas, there is an occasional gem to be found. Enroute, Air Canada’s in-flight magazine surveys a few, from Sweden to Spain, that are worth checking out.
